when the birds and butterflies sing, and dance around in the circus ring
they don't see the wild mad thoughts or desperate darkness, or hot retorts
the flock that sits high in the tree, pretending to be the noble court
a thousand eyes cast down, preying on your every twisted move,
claustrophobic nerves, they flicker and they burn, on edge and dark and so alert
that cage of deep and bitter love, pulls you in and hard to release
wings of feathers so delicate and true, give me love but let me free
black bird, white bird, too, deep long eyes and no answers through
