There is never a good way
to end a fever,
especially with a temperature

this high. He stays in bed, of course,
as recommended,
swallows aspirin and drinks,

and what is even better,
dreams up lies.
After all, she said the money was just

incidental, and he believed that,
so he's saved
the red-tipped stubs

of her cigarettes
to keep fixed in his eyes
that last view of Margaret, kneeling.
