Note: the song mentioned in the title of the poem was the most popular rock song of 1981.

     had no wish
     to write poetry
     in english
     till 1981
     in 1981
     left own family behind
     went down
     from michigan
     to florida
     in a toy
     ota tercel
     a small orange car
     stereo
     on
     "Betty Davies eyes"
     and on
     rains poured
     onto
     dry florida soil

     four years later
     goodbye
     florida solid
     grass cutting
     church going
     citizens
     and
     florida
     bums
     florida
     cries
     toyota & i
     pass trucks in rain
     like we had a wish
     to die
     georgia alabama mississipi lousiana
     texas texas texas texas
     new mexico arizona nevada
     california
     roads of blue and red
     ocean and mountains
full hair bright fur in skies
     all dry
     don't give a damn

     six years
     you're beautiful  true
     but fuck you california too

     goodbye toyota
     didn't treat you well
     am i crazy
why am i talking to a car
     i'll junk my toyota tercel
     i feel like shit

i am on my way again
     ole'!
... the world gets smaller  and   smaller    end

California Still Dreamin

Great rhythm in your work. I took that journey but stayed.

Resonant

This resonated with my own cross-cultural trip, earlier in my life. It evokes a bittersweet freedom, a ride to no one waiting for you and to nowhere you absolutely have to be. Thank you for the read.

"Crossing America" pie...

Coming from a very small country myself and seeing how young people there are flying into other lands like birds, I can't imagine what Americans would do to blow off steam or to run away or to stay sane if they could not get on a car and run run run... Today cross America drives are so much

Americana as American pie...and you had yours. I loved the rhythm and I believe that I got some of the desperation and perhaps the hope.

Mexico~!

I am finding I possess a new better understanding of your work. I always enjoyed it, but perhaps I have learned.

I like the way this poem does in fact cause me to feel as though I have journeyed with you. I like your style and the honesty in your poetry.

Man

People are so harsh..I think people need to learn the difference between a helpful critique and just being rude.

Anyway, I loved this..felt I took the drive right along with you. Next time you get the itch, swing by my place,I'll be waiting with my thumb out! :P
