The day unscheduled, you may climb the hill
to sit and listen, not specifically
for any distant noise; there is no sound

you know you mustn't miss. The birds will sing
according to their wont, and all our talk
is strictly channeled - the unknown

will certainly remain so. What you'll hear
is just the wind's play, maybe, and the cars
that hoot on past to reach the motorway

like homing pigeons, only louder. You
could hear some other walkers talking - you
might even be addressed, but as you don't

have much to say they'll soon pass on to leave
you sitting there alone with in your ears
the tapestry those well-known noises weave.
