In Hollywood, the twenties were
    A grand, excessive time
Where handsome guys and luscious gals
    Mimed love in scenes sublime.

John Gilbert bested many men
    To star with Miss Garbo—
An envious position when
He kissed her, long and slow.

Yet he was quite an actor, as
    In Vidor'sBig Parade.
In battle scenes, his valor seemed
    Quite real, not masquerade.

But these were silent films, of course.
    When talkies came to town
Cher Gilbert stumbled, his poor voice
    Unsuitable to sound.

While Greta's accent charmed their fans
    John's didn't. Though unfair,
She kept her fame . His rôle became
   The Man Who Wasn't There.

Great stuff!

It's hard to write a ballad (I'm struggling with mine right now) and not make it sound dated but you managed it! Well done.

stopping to say

I hate ballads.

And I am sorry you had to write this.

But I am glad you are back because if anyone can do decent ballad suppose it might as well be you :)
