When We Left Together

the boxes are still unpacked
in the corners
and the mattress is flat
on the floor.

we would say this is our house
but we haven't
found a key
 for the back door.

there's a pizza box
for a table
and some spare change
on the drawer.

we would go on down
to the laundromat
but they closed it
the month before.

there used to be some reason
for keeping it all together
but we can't remember it
