as the crib slowly rocked
my arms outstretched
for the embrace returned to sender
You never hugged me
after my first piano recital
I was so innocent then
plump cheeks you prodded
and pinched
as squeals of laughter hid the pain
You never hugged me
at my college graduation
my path vague and unpaved
only a car honked in the distance
You never hugged me
when I became a man
timid and vulnerable
afraid to be touched
unworthy of affection
Was it the illness?
the constant pain
crippled body
torn inside out
Rejected as a child
you were teased and taunted
afraid of the darkness
always alone
Maybe you just need a hug
to be as complete
as I ought to be
Before the final darkness
the irregular breath
the skipped beat
take this hug

Very poignant and heartbreaking poem. Filled with pain and torment. I can see the image of the baby, the child, and the man you were becoming. Just a wonderful poem. Feeling your pain and giving in ... Hugging you ... my friend ~!
