I was working in a path lab and we saw some, but not large numbers.
And not all of our convict forebears were innocent little Scots or Irish or people who stole a loaf of bread. But we do like to keep the myth going.
And the truly terrible criminals still went to the gallows as before.
Those capable of heinous offenses make poor colonists after all, since they are not the sort to be trusted by their fellow colonists and without trust cooperation doesn't happen.

As discussed with Tw0Cr0ws, the worst STDs around in the 1970s were things a few people brought back from Vietnam. AIDS started to appear in the gay community in the 1980s and it took a while after that to spread to the hetero population.
So, sorry, you can't kill them off that way. Try one of Britease's stories. He's much better on retribution.
You are correct about the emergence in the Gay community in 1981 but HIV/AIDS presented problem in the 3rd World well in advance of that.
Having lost a family member to the disease I wouldn't wish it on anyone. That said there was heterosexual transfer well in advance of it hitting the gay community.
So did I, and like you I wouldn't wish it on anybody. (Not even Lue, who has had it wished upon her a couple of times now.)
True, it was around in the third world before, (and in animals before that?). But we hadn't heard about it in the 70s. Our relative who died of the dread disease had to go to the USA to catch it.
