To the question about 'who is estranged,' I thought the concept was fairly clear that Mel and Stephan are estranged. The definition of estranged relatives is as follows: 'no longer friendly, alienated.' Mel and Stephan have not spoken in years and have lost touch with each other - they might still be friendly if they were to run into each other, but otherwise have no contact.

Until this story, of course.
