I really liked this story. I don't know whether it is truly a translation from a French original - but the effect of the use of the slightly halting English makes it so much more real. The narrator sounds like an acquaintance of mine - a purely platonic acquaintance, incidentally - a very attractive twenty something Frenchwoman - would sound if she were relating the same sequence of events to me The language found in most writing in this genre sounds just like writing - people don't talk that way - but this, for me, was different, and very impressive
