I gave this short story a five even though I don't like the theme. I also think it's incomplete. Our two main characters are more complicated than what appears. I'm not even sure our husband fully understands what she's doing and has been doing.
Men, like all male animals, are territorial, this is 'my' woman. Those who get excited about sharing or playing the happy cuckold aren't behaving normally. I'd like to see Emma take this a little further; place the cuckold in a circumstance where he's expected to behave one way, the happy cuckster, but internally is repelled by it. He's torn between being degraded out of love for his spouse and being a 'true man'. She, the wife, by the same token has to decide what she really wants. Does she want to perpetually degrade and humiliate someone who adores her or should she reconsider who she wants to be?
This is an old story; a man slavishly in love with a woman who emotionally engineers the destruction of the man who first attracted her attention. Mika Watari, probably misspelled, wrote a book titled The Egyptian about an ancient doctor drawn in by a courtesan who, for no apparent reason other than that she could, slowly destroyed him. I recall the doctor was named Sinowae and the prostitute was Nefer Nefer, both names spelled phonetically. It was one of several subplots to the main theme. It was made into a movie back in the 1950's. I first saw it on late night TV circa 1965 when I was 18 and in the army.
Emma might be advised to look into her main characters; both of whom have personalities that deviate from the cultural norm, a cultural norm that is several millennia old. How did her heroin become who she was? What was her male protagonist like before he met her. How did these characters evolve, or devolve, into who they might be? Did they have a future, or for love's sake would they see change as necessary? Or was what they were doing, though intrinsically destructive, what they would try to maintain?
