while i liked the story, when the bet was at 30k double or nothing, the couple would just have to give the 30k back nothing else. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't owe an extra 30k.

When is double or nothing not double or nothing?
When the couple was up $20K and a double or nothing bet was made, it should have been $40K to the couple if they won or nothing to Nick. How it got to $30K I can't figure out and how the couple owed Nick when they lost one race that was supposed to be double or nothing doesn't make sense.
I like the concept of the story, but those details catch in the reader's mind and it takes away from the rest of the action.

Wrong understanding of gambling
The other comment hit the nail on the head. Double or nothing means the couple risked their CURRENT winnings NOT an additional $30k. Good story but that did detract from it.
