"maggots crawl
behind those sad sack eyes" made me shiver. The whole poem is spare - no wasted words. Perfect.

Yup... it's the line about the maggots that tattoos this onto our minds forever. Garrison Keillor has a Lake Wobegon character named "Mr. Bergey" who could be your man. It's an archetype, isn't it? Well crafted.
