This sucks. First, I am sorry I read this before Ch. 07 comes out. Very powerful and I can see this all happening.

I am slightly surprised that a Grant committee cares about morals and applications of research. Didn't happen in my career.

Not sure if they can pull it out. Deke seems to have broke Miranda.

The fallacy that streamlined is better and inputs should create predictable outputs will make Deke alone. A single rejection from strangers made him question his world view to the point of regression. Chapter 7 will need to pull this story out of a tragic tailspin.

I believe things will turn better (just because it's a story) but the old saying of it's always darkest before dawn is very true here.

should the process be to find out if the drug can work then worry about the morals ? i mean when did they worry about the morals of the plan b pill? or did they develop the anti hiv pill then say you know we should just wait til we have the aids pill instead? the drug could be used for anti psychotics or depression if it was developed like any other drug.

I hated this

I want to punch Deke in the nose. I don't know how you're going to convince us that Miranda feels safe with him again, and that he won't turn into an asshat in the future. For those asking about research review boards: the point is to ensure the ethics of research. There are many hoops to jump through - for the protection of people. One can't (anymore) just decide to investigate something regardless of its (likely) impact.

Asperger's or not, this guy is simply an asshole. He will never find another woman that will put up with his crap like Miranda does. Looks like a whole lot of shit will be flying soon. This kind of stress and mental abuse could cause Miranda to lose the baby I think she is carrying. Mentally challenged people often seem to try and take advantage of their condition to do bad things. If Deke's parents take Miranda out of there and away from all his abuse; he will probably wind up crying like the selfish baby he is.

There's been a major change in Decons life, part of that change is because of Miranda. Is she now the problem instead of the helpmate that has been instrumental for Deke. Allright I'm asking, Is Miranda pregnant?

Personally I doubt that Miranda is pregnant. Surely someone who had borne a child conceived from rape would take precautions against another unplanned pregnancy. At any rate I think at one point she told Deacon that she was safe.

Wow, didn't expect this much conversation on this chapter! I submitted chapter 7 the same day as chapter 6, hoping they would post the same day on the site, but apparently it doesn't work that way.

Such fantastic writing.

But here's a thought: why's every "romance" writer feel the need to make their characters terrible? Why does every romance story have to have a chapter where the main character treats his SO like shit. And we all expect there to be a happy end?! All I can say is: poor Miranda. She's such a sweetie through this whole thing and I'm so sad that Deke had to treat her this bad. Deke better fight off a dragon before I'm willing to forgive him...

I don't think every romance writer makes their characters do something terrible, as you suggest. Yes, I've done that in a few stories. But in others of my stories ("Bottles," "More than a Substitute," Glen and Dottie in "Of Hope Lost and Found," Thomas and Dottie in "Of Hope Lost and Found," Donna and Steve in "Sisters" to list a few that come to mind) the characters have no such problem.
But I think the reason it's a common plot device is that, in order to have some sort of plot other than "will they or won't they get into bed?" there needs to be conflict. And in relationships, some of the most serious conflict we have is working through the hurt that we cause one another. Can we forgive? Can we heal? These are the questions we are often dealing with on our own lives, and so for many of us, they are the questions we like seeing fictional characters deal with as well.

Miranda: pregnant or not

To the commenter who said Miranda took precautions: yes, the author mentioned Miranda was on birth control, HOWEVER, he also says she has TB and is on an antibiotic. Most people forget that antibiotics can decrease the efficiancy of birth control and that a backup method should be used. I had a friend get pregnant while being on the pill after taking an antibiotic for a sinus infection.
