Hopeless in the sense that the old wasted and ill-formed person called Jack has been left behind in the old world where he was doomed to live his fantasies alone and afraid. Perhaps I should have used another term, but to those that have these fantasies, feeling hopeless IS part of the fantasy. It's like being in a bondage situation and knowing the rope is stronger than you are. If it isn't, then what's the point?
