That is one of the biggest problem with so many stories. The whole point of 1st person is to know the character's thoughts and feelings, but all too often they are as dispassionate as a neutral 3rd person narrator.

I'm not sure which is worse, stories like that or ones where the thoughts and feelings are clearly leading one direction, and the writer suddenly has the character acting completely contrary to those thoughts and feelings.
