I liked it...I really liked it!
Good beginning, with all sorts of possibilities. Problem is, my imagination got in the way, and I keep picturing the mother as an old Gloria Swanson, instead of a still-attractive woman in her 40s.
Sigh!

Nice setup
You've set up the reader quite nicely. You've given backgrounds to the characters and made them believeable. Sad, though, that Sophie is so enamoured by sleazy Jason. It makes this reader loose respect for Sophie.
