This is what mature adults do in tragic circumstances

I read this and I compare it to Michael Bay's (well, I could end right there as a condemnation, couldn't I?) Pearl (GAG) Harbor. That movie lost me when Ben Affleck and that other guy got into a visceral fist fight over the exact same circumstance.

One weakness I felt in this story was I did not realize until you actually gave us a date that this WAS set so far back in time. I kept getting hints from the voices and the fact mom died from fever, but until he got the telegram, it was a timeless tale.

Which, I suppose, is how it should be. This is the human condition, after all and you can probably read about these same sad stories back in Sumer.

Let's be honest here

If you're writing or directing a movie that stars Ben Affleck, you're going to beat the living crap out of him or make him wear a fat suit. This story does not star Affleck so it doesn't need that extra oomph.
