Just my opinion
I really liked this well written and ovbiously heartfelt story. However, I don't accept the author's certainty that that night was the end. Love's too rare in our lives to simply say goodbye and let go.
Ok, Roland, you've lost contact with her. If you want to continue your relationship, stop playing at martyr and start searching. Baring something having happened to her, she's out there. Search the web (starting with Google), contact the high school reunion committee, check with her friends, maybe even her family.
Anything's better than living with regret.

Beautifly sad
The only reason I voted this 75% is the ending. I admit I am a hopeless romantic so that a story of love told as well as this one is has an ending that disappointed me. I guess I was looking for a "Hollywood" ending where they meet again and "ride off into the sunset". Oh well.
Keep up the good work.
Eloquence befitting an English Major.
Well, I don't think the little thermometers there are really indicative of the sweetness that is this story. Very bittersweet, but also very well written. I very much like this quote:
"It is no coincidence that sand is associated with both sleep, as the Sandman, and the passage of time, as in an hourglass. For we pass our lives in dream, seldom conscious for the decisions we make at every moment, our knowledge of consequence hazy as fever. And as when sleeping, some cataclysm must awake us, so our world must be shattered before we realise that with every moment that passes we have one less opportunity to seize that which may make our lives whole."
Mayhaps, if you ever were to do literature, you should include that quote. It is accurate and very well phrased. In fact, I would like to quote you sometime in the future, and I will do so with your permission.

Easily the most well written story I've read on Literotica. Life's like that and I admire the maturity of the protagonists in seeing the writing on the wall that it was not only their first but also their last. And yet, the incorrigible optimist would wish for the two to meet again, and come together, to share their love... Wonderful, indeed!!!
