Gauntet & Gamut
Gauntlet as in “to accept a challenge” to which the IC and his team repeatedly respond. Those from the political outsiders and the painful ones from within as that between the Sheriff and IC.
Gamut means “the full range or scope of something” from the legal "win" over Browniee, the relief from back pain to the anger and grief over Joe Smedley's assassination and the fears and bewilderment about who was the REAL intended victim.

Priya's interview was well timed don't you think. Was the real target someone not mentioned but a family member of the Troy clan, maybe get Della as two with one, would work out well for the Council if a candidate for election was hit as well. All I know is that in real life when this happens it goes into slo-mo and I have never worked out why that happens, you have to live it to understand what I mean and you WW have put it like how it feels and it happens all to often. I am still unsure of the Sheriffs wife not being involved in some of this as she works on what side that pays the most, also she is not happy sis is with her ex. Would love to see either Cook, Krasney or Katherine Woodburn get slotted, just to level the playing field. A simple road accident not set up but an unplanned event, to make the chickens in the hen house think that the fox (IC) has broken in to their safe haven would be better. Keep the stories coming all are great reads. Happy New Year to you WW.

Interesting how the Sherrif's good wife has been MIA, as of late. Also, I agree that Joe waant necessarily the intended target - I'm thinking it was Michael's. Since we know this 'motorcycle assassin' was male, I'd put money on Scott. He has some serious issues...

Confused--
I enjoy very much your stories. But I am confused about one aspect. It seems in your stories that the Sheriff is over the Police Dept and also over Fire Dept. along with also over Public Health Dept. In state where I live the Sheriff is only over his own dept. -- has no control over Police, Fire or other Departments. Sheriff is a county office, and police and fire are city entities. Just a little confusing to me.

Some answers
On structure: many jurisdictions do separate the Sheriff from the municipal police. Some counties even have County Police separate from the Sheriff. Some have them as I've described for my mythical Town & County. "When in Rome..."
I've had some private messages anonymously sent so I can't respond to them. Mostly asking about which person died in 'In Black and White'. No, the answer has not been revealed... that's part of the story! Separate and unequal searches, what was the outcome? Even the author isn't sure...
