Half a story is not a story

We are given the scene where the devil has violent sex with the woman. But since we know nothing about the woman this makes the scene devoid of any emotional reaction from the reader. Without being able to empathize with a character we cannot care about what happens to that character. A few paragraphs before the scene might have done the job.
