I'm always amused that women don't have spare keys. the rest of it depends on finances. Who has the extra dollar to build a stash of food and diapers?
Being broke myself and supporting a neighbor who was a single mother, I knew she didn't have any savings. How con you build savings when you don't have extra cash? We're not talking about $20/mo. Savings means $200/mo. If you don't dip into your savings, at 20/mo, that's 240/yr. That is NOTHING.

For years I've tried to carry a spare $20 behind my driver's license. That way if you need a couple dollars at the end of the week for something, you have it. Don't forget to replace it if you've spent it, and be sure not to lose it at an airport if you take your license out to go through security.
The idea is that if you get rolled or lose your wallet, you have a backup fund in the trunk.
