Much more realistic an ending than any others I've read. The idea of the mulligan agreement between spouses is very believable. They do have a lot invested in each other. I don't consider him a weak cuckhold. She's not out chasing random dick, bringing guys home to fuck in their bed while he watches, blah, blah, blah. Pretty sure when my wife confesses to me about her cheating on me, the last I would want to do is touch her. I think revulsion, nausea, and anger would more likely the norm in that situation.

Real ending is that slut wife had gotten STD from good ole Gil, which the slut thoughtfully passed on to Steve. Slut also got PG from good ole Gil. Steve got the STD treated, kept it silent from the slut, kicked her ass to the curve. She had the kid out of wedlock and DNA proved Gil's kid. So, no child support in the divorce. She ended up working at Goodwill with her parents taking care of the bastard kid. Meanwhile the untreated STD rendered her incapable of further child bearing. Gil ended up in a protective cell in the Special Housing Unit (SHU) after getting the shit kicked out of him repeatedly by a gang of black inmates who liked white asses. He died there of the STD. When buried, Gil thoughtfully pissed on his grave.

Punishment enough

The pain of infidelity can be so overwhelming. Donna's statement that the memory of the pain she has caused is punishment enough might insinuate that the victim's pain is really not so great. I am not convinced that the adulterer can identify retribution. I think that marriage can survive limited infidelity, but it will never be the same as it was. Something is always lost or changed if trust is betrayed even once.

Stay with a cheat, or divorce a slut and deal with the suffering. What she didn't think about and what isn't said here is how her cheating and her lying will eat at the marriage until it kills it. He will meet other women, he will have no reason not to pursue them now. In his mind he can justify any and all cheating because of her adultery. Part 3 is reality.

This story must have had a powerful effect on many readers. It's still receiving comments some 12 years after publication. I was attracted by Sugna's comment about what he sees as 'cheating'.

He asks "Have you ever been there?" and asserts:

I can't speak for everybody, but I assure you that the amount of conscious and rational thought that goes into what he calls "cheating" and I might call "wandering" can be minimal for a woman caught up in the emotional excitement of the situation and who sees herself as appreciated for something beyond what her husband and kids see in her.

'Weighing the consequences' couldn't be further from your mind. Fear of getting caught? Maybe. But rational thought about the consequences? Get real !

If Sugna has "ever been there" and found that it didn't "just happen" and if he "weighed the consequences" he must be a cold and unemotional fish.
