One thing we haven't seen explored so much from the books is public exposure. The second book had the character strip in a theater in on chapter. In Joans case, when she goes to Dr Charles, he could work on that culminating in a visit to a dockside bar next to a brothel. She would strip, dance, and proudly show all her "assets" as marketing for the nearby establishment. And when that was over be taken back to her apartment instead of being ravished because she hasn't shown she was obedient enough.
