Are you having problems identifying the characters

Some people have told me they are having problems figuring out which of my characters are human. These stories are written rather realistically. If you are wondering, probably so is my main character. Then, I get comments about the backgrounds of main characters. You only know what the character telling the story sees. Sometimes I add more simply because I must, but I don't like to give away more than the main character knows. It keeps you guessing, and hopefully reading, but more than that...It helps you understand what the characters are actually feeling, too.
