Well written and exciting!

Great inspiration! And a lovely combination of themes. I like how you play with both reluctancy and pleasure. But if this story takes place in the French Revolution, which began in 1798 if I remember well, then "the philosophers" hadn't declared God dead already, did they? Except for that, strong dialogues! And very smart to avoid an happy ending by changing the focalisation. You could have done more with the "dirt-on-the-floor"- thing though.
