Perhaps I'm nitpicking, but if you are writing a story and trying to pass it off as an historical diary, you need to get your historical facts straight. The name Port Royal wasn't given to that place until after the British invaded Jamaica and took over in 1655. So, you couldn't have been "Off Port Royal" in 1642, as Port Royal was known as Caguay/Caguaya (Spanish) or Cagway (British) until sometime after 1655.
