I can see the cold wife and her thoughts being real, so nici gave a plausable opening. Your ending showed a lack of thought and respect for the husband. Real? Maybe, but your obvious lack of respect for mechanics (know how much they make? Know the intricacies of an engine?) made this ending nothing more than a poor, dumb man getting screwed over. Yes, that's possible and maybe even probable, but this is fiction and with all you had to start with, my opinion is you did poorly.

Not even chess masters win every game so why do cheating spouses really think they are invincible? That they will win in any possible circumstance? Puzzling.

In that attitude their loss is even more consequential than had they just divorced then screwed around.

I know you're trying to write a different version of another story, by changing the character from a smart husband to a dumb husband, but the repetition really made the story uninteresting. ... but has a predictable conclusion and sets a bad example by exposing children to the consequences of a family breakdown. Rather, Chris might have said nothing to April following Carl's beating. The story could then have been developed from there, with a child-friendly ending.

In the old world they would have put her to the pillory at town square for a week and then drove her out of town for good, but no, today a woman can get away with shit like that.

The real shame is: In the real world she would have indeed gotten everything. No fault states, such a joke, you must be retarded to marry in those shitholes.

First, he would be indicted for conspiracy and a half dozen other charges. If he only was found guilty of a minor charge, he would be sentenced on the major charge. That is not fair, but that is how it is in modern USA. A conviction would be certain. He attacked an attorney. An attorneys is part of the system and is treated like an attack on a judge or policeman.

With a 95% conviction rate, there are no fair criminal trials in the USA except for the privileged. Modern day criminal trial in the USA are Star Chambers that would make Stalin proud. The state selects the jury pool and sends out questionairs to eliminate anyone that thinks or is not a statists. Then the judge and DA work together so that the jury is composed of people that think if a person is charged he must be guilty. Then the judge allows the DA to introduce any evidence and severely restricts what the defense can introduce.

Even if the trial was fair, he would be convicted because he told his wife about the attack and the three thugs told the attorney that the assault was because he fucked the wife. That is proof beyond a reasonable doubt that he was involved. Furthermore, he, his wife, and coworkers would all be questioned and they are not smart enough to not answer question so someone would slip up and turn states evidence in exchange for immunity.

Second, even if against all odds he didn't go to prison, the divorce would just like his wife said. Adultry is not a factor. She would get custody, child support, alimony, medical, and likely he would make payments on the house until the children were grown and then the house would be sold. He would be granted liberal visitation but the wife would prevent it and the courts never enforce visitation orders. The courts only enforces child support and alimony. The wife would be living high on the hog and he would be living in a shack and driving an old car. That too is not fair but in the USA that is how it is.

Convicting the husband wouldn't be a slam dunk. First, since the husband didn't beat the lawyer, they would have to find some proof. His wife can't be made to testify against him, so if she does, her word is going to be suspect. At any rate she would have to testify that her husband was home. The lawyer might just claim it was a mugging for fear of potentially fatal consequences if he doesn't. And lastly, the wife could testify that someone called and said her lover was in the hospital, but if her husband was convicted, there would be no child support. How can you pay if you're in jail?

Secondly one would imagine that the consequences of testifying against her husband would be extreme for her. All their friends would find out exactly what she did. Her betrayal of her husband would make it very hard to find another, at least in the circle of her soon to be former friends. Her husband would probably be in jail, if he was convicted, for only a short time. By the time it came to trial her lover would be out of the hospital. All the jurors would see would be a slime bag that seems healthy. The sympathy would be with the husband, and the only evidence would be that given by the wife, testifying that her husband told her that her lover was in the hospital. That's awfully thin evidence.

If I were on the jury, I would use that as an excuse not to convict. After all, that Anthony woman if Florida got off Scot free after killing her daughter. I find your confidence in our legal system refreshing, but totally naive.

The direct confrontation that night took a lot of backbone.

I not sure it was a very wise decision. It would be difficult to get a jury to convict on such evidence, but his knowledge of the facts means that he knew what was going to happen to Carl, and could have prevented it. My guess is that it Carl values his life, he would never even try to press charges, and take his lumps as a lesson learned, but Chris did expose himself as an accessory. This felt like a organised crime boss building an alibi, but I actually think the alibi would have been stronger if they had taken the kids somewhere, like to a mall, where Chris could make a reciept trail to prove he was not at the scene of the crime.

That said, it did show April that Chris was not going to roll over, and that was probably the point. If April had already built up such contempt for Chris, I believe that she would have lashed out at him for his actions, instead of withering.

I did enjoy the story, and gave it five stars. Thank You.

Frontal attack vs careful trap

Hubby received a phone call on his cell phone. A lawyer was mugged! There is a very narrow balance point here! If the lawyer sees mostly negative outcomes, such as bad publicity and future beatings, then Hubby and gang will get by with this solution. If the lawyer feels that his safety will be greater with the perps behind bars, the perps will likely go down! That is a risk I would not want to take, nor would I have to with just a little planning. Chief among those would be for Sweetie to get the call FROM a throw-away phone. Voice would be muffled, and information read from a paper, to be destroyed immediately along with the phone! Then, Sweetie would have to look up the hospital number while Hubby says NOTHING. There is no great need to have dated and timed receipts from 30 miles away. The testimony of the kids that Daddy was with them should suffice. Sweetie would probably NOT perjure herself, either!

Without the Bull's assistance, Sweetie could not muster much of a legal case regarding the attack, but her divorce settlement would not be compromised! Precipitous action sometimes works, but often does not, especially when the 'other side' is organized, or skilled, or prepared!

An enjoyable read overall. Question remains as to the precipitating factors for Sweeties 'walk on the wild side!'

PS - if an ambulance-chaser were able to 'take over' my Sweetie's sexual dedication, I think I would simply QUIT the relationship game altogether!

Not exactly revenge but it is a start

April was either mentally ill or mentally challenged to think that she had the upper hand with a blue Joe that was straight as an arrow like Chris in accepting her fucking another man blatantly. Chris would've almost gotten off murder charges for killing his cheating slut wife and her weasel fuckbuddy. You'd think a person as educated as a lawyer would be more suave and sensible than to get tied into a husband and wife with kids breakup. Carl was playing with fire and most men would take great pleasure in beating the fuck out of him on principle. They probably should've done something when they had their meets. The story was disturbing and April was so deranged and myopic that it didn't make any sense. I gave the story a 3 star rating. I think the author didn't orchestrate the characters to make this an enjoyment. Instead this was a shipwreck that would sink due to constipation. April would not and did not suffer in any credible way.The victim was Chris and he was never redeemed in this story. Chris was destroyed and in spite of friends he stayed destroyed. A great revenge would've been setting up April or Carl with a sex partner with a serious STD like HIV or HEPATITIS C. The revenge was too vanilla and the gorilla was still in the room at the end of this story. Please try again author.

Loved it

It seems the beating was a non spoken threat to what would happen to her if she didn't sign off on the divorce. The guy got what he deserved without being killed or permanently maimed. It was the threat of more to come if he didn't tow the line. Whether he could have taken it to another level, we may never know.

Consequences

The funny thing is that most of the people that I have met who make bad decisions and suffer the consequences do not think it is their fault. They believe that it is somehow somebody else's fault that they are suffering. They deny the truth and lie to others about the circumstances in which they have found themselves.

Lessons learned

I do not understand society today. There is marches and court drama for same sex marriage... yet.. there is nothing spoken or mentioned or demanded for laws to protect innocent spouses from adulterous spouses. everything open and fair game, just think, if her affair was recorded, documented, making it a crime against her and her lover, do you think she would have been so threatening? Losing the house, restricted visitations, and her lover paying a huge price too. This happens all to often and nobody makes a stand.

Karen E, talk to a couple of guys who have been through divorce, they will tell you that restricted visitation happens, and very often. Usually when the adulterous x-wife realizes the wonderful boyfriend is not wonderful and even more flawed than the husband.

Wifey should have been beaten also (by a woman) to teach her a lesson. As it stands, she got off scot free even with the divorce. I believe that she didn't love hubby OR the kids; just your typical, everyday, ordinary slut/whore wife (there are SO many of them out there!) I have also seen and known wives who would literally give their lives for their families so I guess it balances out. But slut/whores are still out there!

Thoughts

“Of course, I never let him do those things to me either.” – AGAIN with the wife letting her lover do things she won’t let her husband do, then complain that he isn’t as good in bed as her lover! And as far as her husband thinking she’s a slut; first of all, that’s highly unlikely – most husbands like their sex the sluttier the better! And if she’s REALLY worried, she can bring it up as something her friends talked about, or she heard on Oprah, or read about in “50 Shades of Gray”, and ask him what he thinks. If he’s interested, great! If he acts disgusted, she drops it.

She “loves” Chris, but she’d clean him out in a divorce and keep him away from the kids he loves? Spare me that kind of love! LOL, Robin said the same thing!

Incomplete and too fast

It was well written, and at least fairly well thought out. In reading a few (very few) of the comments from other readers I have to think that had more of the story been fleshed out that some of the negativity could have been avoided. The contrast in her behavior was too much for me. You, I don't think, can't be fearful and contemptuous at the same time, and this telling of the story shows her as both. I think that a longer more detailed story of her attitude adjustment from being purely contemptuous to fearful would have made more sense calling out (in varying levels of detail) specific instances and "steps". From strictly contempt to a small (almost "inconsequential") fear (worry) to a nagging concern, to a...well...you get the idea. That's, in my estimation, the only way to tell a story like this which starts off with the premise that her vision of her husband and marriage is a sham. The retribution and collapse was too fast. Someone who holds that much villainy doesn't roll so quickly. But, maybe that's just me.
