Sad and True...

I get sick of stories of boorish and monstrous "gangstas" screwing their "bitches" and/or [w]ho[re]s-- or worse yet, super-virile brainless jerks who would cuckold wimpy people. Ultimately, anyone who desire to write good erotica should take the time and read good literature and pursue a life exploring outside one's own culture.

Concur 100%

Your analysis and statements were very thought provoking! I concur with you 100%. I fully enjoy Black Erotica that is respectful of all men and women without all the negative stereotypes. True Black Erotica is very hot, sensuous, and respectful as well as involving all aspects of society socio-economically / culturally. Personally I disapprove of any erotica tales that are abusive and disrespectful of anybody regardless of race, color, sex, creed, and sexual persuasion. Your commentary was right on the mark as related to Black Erotica. I truly hope that Samuelx reads your commentary and learns because his 325+ writings on Literotica.com largely are very short, abusive, disrespectful of all people as well as full of negative stereotypes especially about black people and the black culture.

Thanks

An interesting treatise that gave me a glimpse into a world I don't know much of.

So sad that something that could tell such great and important stories has been banalized to such a great degree.

sad truth...

I discovered Erotique Noire on foreign study in 1994, and completely agree; there has been nothing like it since. That said, I've enjoyed the Brown Sugar series (edited by Carol Taylor), if only for the variety and relatively good writing. Having been published in a Zane anthology, you are correct in that as a black writer, it's impossible to imagine black erotica without her and her influence. Your points about wanting to distance oneself from the ghettoized sex-books were valid as well. Perhaps such talented authors as yourself (I won't deign to add my name there) will lead an African-American erotica revolution? One hopes...

Very true...

Poignant and, sadly, very true.

Sad but true

This text is painful as it is so true. Personally I got into to reading fantasy fiction as a way of searching to literate erotic text which defied narrow boundaries.
I think the internet may offer a way to overcome the limitation of of the mainstream publication industries. I accidentally stumbled on this site by searching 'black erotic literature'. Initially I wasn't happy by what I saw Black male studs do racially curious blond etc. A friend mentioned a couple of stories on here that actually explored relationships, personalities and different perspectives on social / cultural settings. I feel this site needs to have sub categories for sections such as inter racial that give warning whether they proliferate tired old 'plantationesque' images and stories or explore some of the good, bad and erotically possible stories that create thinking space as well as engaging reading.

What we need are more pieces like the one you wrote, more promotion of writers such as Zane and ways of shortcutting the limited perceptions readily promoted through mainstream quarters. The points you raise are very similiar to issues identified in the music industry. I have no problems with there being a place for 'gangsta rap' etc. I do have problem when these musical verbs and images are the only ones given air time.

Apologies for the ramble. Thank you for a much needed thought provoking piece

Inspiring and thought provoking!

This was so powerful for me that I'm rewriting my stories to reflect more depth in my characters! Thank you for sharing and for helping me to see another side of Black Erotica.
