There are two answers to the "Why didn't they go to his place" question - one funny, one not.

A) The story was originally written at the request of my publisher - who needed it OVERNIGHT and only at 1500 words MAX. I had to write it in a hurry and eliminate as much superfluous detail as I could.

B) The "not funny" answer is that Raymond was totally unaware the first time out what was going to happen. After that, perhaps he preferred the motel for discretionary purposes or perhaps he only has a small apartment [ which you find out in the sequel he doesn't ... ]
