You never cease to amaze with your ability to take unlikely subjects and make them work with lush settings, vivid characterization, inventive plotting, and precise and succinct use of the language--and that delicious little twist at the end that sends chills even when we see it coming. Who could have known that raw lust, unrequited passion, miscegenation, incest, voyeurism, triangular love predicaments, deepseated prejudice, and degeneracy could be woven together with themes as primeval as Essau and Jacob and Cain and Abel to produce a mature, delicately and skillfully crafted period story that would work so well on so many levels? High-quality literary fiction this.
