There are lots of hatha variants, as you said ... one worth mentioning is Vinyasa, which focusses on a kind of flow through the various movements. Ashtanga is the root from which all the others flow.

The thing is, if you don't practice regularly, you won't get much benefit. I have sometimes been very regular ... but not lately, and I really regret the difference.

Even half an hour every day can make a huge difference. Morning, evening ... going to a formal class is a nice kind of discipline, and can help you do things better, but going to a class a few times a week plus your own practice is probably the ideal way to go.

The yoga studio near me offers 'Yin', which seems to be what you described in Iyengar. They also offer 'Nidra' which is similar, but the poses aren't as deep or held as long and also involves meditation.

I dont know if these are common variants or not as I only recently started yoga, but I thought that I would mention these types, as I have no idea if others might encounter them or not.
