What is wrong with you people? Shawn chose to do the swapping so he could fuck Maria, now try carrying a baby in your stomach for nine months just to give it up. So if you ask me Shawn was an asshole in this story giving her that bloody ultimatum WHEN he's the reason they swapped, so the ten grand "gift" at the end should have been used to pay off debts and set Julie on a new life since she can move on and find a better man. Male protagonist lacking character and decency
Men have been raising children not their own since time beyond memory or record. In this story the self-centered anti-hero was fully complicit in the exchange of wives and is thus just as responsible for the pregnancy as was his wife. A child comes into the world innocent and helpless, and has a right to be loved and cared for by the human race in general regardless of the details of whose sperm and ova. Some South Pacific cultures did not identify fatherhood and considered all children to belong to the entire tribe or village. That is a more decent and 'civilized' way of life than the obsession of men with passing on their genes to the extreme degree of abandoning a new mother and newborn child like this lowlife piece of shit did. A decent resolution would have been to describe the child as adopted if his fragile, bloated ego required that to avoid being embarrassed by the child's appearance. This is from a true bastard who has been there and experienced that.
