I like this one, NJ. I like a poem with a good story and you certainly told one here. :)

You're really on a nature roll this morning. Much fun in this one with a tale well told and a real kicker of an ending.

Eve's comments on 'squirrel's' are what I think too on this one, which is my favorite of those that NJ posted today. This poem has something important to say and it isn't pounding a reader's nose into the message. Nicely said and a profound way to deliver it.

That is so sad no-one is allowed to shoot my squirrels however much of a pest they are

A poet with her heart in the the right place

Anyone who would take a wild animal, especially one towards which she may have perhaps conflicted feelings (see bulps) has her heart in the right place! Her words were very well put too... I did not fully get how the price of gas was computed into the poem at he end, seeing that it did not deter the fatal driver, and who knows if other vehicles (even green ones) will be gentler on the wild life next door...

Beautifully judged

As someone has said before, they're just rats with good PR. You mix the pathos and humour wonderfully.
