For my personal taste, and to echo some of the other comments here, the biggest drawback of the story was the pain felt by your protagonist. I think there is a certain line where the hesitation, confusion and uncertainty is exciting... But when you drop a bomb like "holding back tears", it sort of brings the reader back down to reality too hard. But this, like anything posted here, is just one reader's opinion.
