Why?

I challenge anyone to say they have not liked two people at the same time and then picked one of them over the other. That's what the main character did. And he picked wrong. He picked on looks and not on personality

What I found interesting was that the other woman liked him enough that she waited for him. Maybe the pickings were slim in their area?? But regardless I could, and have, seen this happen before. So I liked the story. This guy didn't have to give away half of his life before he found out that she wasn't the right girl for him.

And as a teen/young man before, I too agree that parents get smarter as you listen to them. My parents tried to tell me about different girls as I grew up, and it was only years later when I was married I saw what they were talking about.

So I really liked this story, to a degree

Great 1950's dating story

I love this story as it brought me back to me dating in the mid- to late- 1950's. I well remember a similar situation involving two gals I was dating. The "high maintenance one," Jane had another guy she was going with just like good old Donna did. Artie was older than either Jane or I, had a late model sports car (I did not have a car as a poor struggling student at the university), and he always wore expensive suits. She kept bringing him up during our dates and what could I do. It was very hard to stop seeing Jane, but I finally succeeded, just like in the story: after I had started dating another gal, Sharon (low maintenance). Thank you for the memories, Woodmanone. Awesome work! (You know, it wasn't your "Donna", but I think I dated her cousin for a couple of years. I was SO stupid!) This story is so real-life, it's almost scary. I could write a full page in agreement with the parts about parents (and siblings) getting smarter when you go away for a few years; or about women who suffer from Center-of-the-Universe Syndrome; or the minor detail that actions have consequences. Life's lessons are sometimes hard, but getting to a good relationship is well worth the pain.

Barbara was the prize for our main character. Donna was toxic and she was a source of pain and drama for our main character. The decision to jettison Donna was probably a good one for all concerned including Donna. There was no aura of mutual assent and respect in their relationship which would have reappeared at some future point again and again. Relationships where one mate is constantly disrespectful to the other can only cause pain and in the long term mental health issues and probably a life of sadness. Getting away from a relationship is much easier said then done. The support of the main character's parent gave added impetus to see clearly a more desired path to a better life. Unfortunately, we all don't have the luxury of support structures and advisors who have our best interest at heart.

Great Story!

Some basic parenting to an older teenage kid, make them think, provide some facts and then let them decide. This Dad did it right, the Son finally absorbed, luckily a possible good option female for Son stuck around due to Dad's asking and it rolled along.
Communication is so big between parents and teenage kids when that sex drive kicks in.
My wife and I survived it with our oldest son, the blood finally left the little head and returned to the bigger head or his Mom would have killed him for stupid shit.

Young folks can be dense

And do you know why? Because they are young. Even mid 20's is young enough to not know what you want in love.

I once went out with a girl in my late teens and really fell in love with her. Unknown to me, she had a boyfriend. My friends however, neglected to tell me. We went out for about a month when she mentioned she needed to talk with Bill (her boyfriend). I was shocked, not knowing she had a boyfriend and immediately backed away and refused to have anything to do with her.

That hurt her terribly. A friend stopped by to ask what happened and after I explained, he mentioned I should talk with her, things had changed. I saw her at a 4th of July picnic in town and somehow drew enough courage to talk with her.

It turned out she thought I knew about Bill, which I didn't. She said she realized she had a big decision to make and it was a choice between Bill and me. I laughed and told her it looked as if I made it for her. She chuckled and told me no, she had made it when she broke up with Bill. It seemed he had been physical with her once, grabbing her by her arm and bruised her when he felt she was doing something he didn't want her to. That made her decision but I still wasn't sure, what sort of girl would go out with two fellows at once?

We stayed in contact and started to hang out together at family functions and swimming at a local swimming hole. The summer went so well that even at the tender age of 18, I knew I wanted to be married to her the rest of my life. A year later we were married, at ages 18 and 19 and as I sit here and type 38 years later, I am watching her water her plants on the front porch as we wait for our grandkids to be dropped off for a BBQ here today.

Life is good IF you know what you truly want in your heart.

Something similar happened to me. The girl I just KNEW I was going to marry was much like Donna. Perhaps not quite so high maintenance however. We had become so serious, at least I was that serious, I went out and bought a ring. We went out to dinner and I was so nervous I was having trouble asking Christies for her hand in marriage. Thankfully, before I could ask, she mentioned something about not being around the next day, she had a date with her other boyfriend. ??? Other boyfriend?

She acted like I knew about Timothy, a guy that I knew, but in truth, I was in shock. After starting and stopping, I finally asked her how long she'd been seeing him and was speechless when I found out even longer than me. Christie told me how much she liked us both and just couldn't give either of us up. I couldn't eat any longer so I stood and tossed down $50 to cover our drinks since we hadn't ordered food yet and told her I needed to leave. Giving her a ride home, it was very quiet, she realized I wasn't very happy.

When she got out and asked when she'd see me again, I told her she probably wouldn't. I was a one woman man and she just wasn't what I thought. The next day I got a call first from her and didn't answer it, but then soon after a friend of hers stopped by and asked me what happened. She knew I was going to propose and since she thought Christie and Tim had broken up, the first thing she did was go to Christies and ask to see her ring! Of course, Christie looked at her like she was an idiot until the whole story came out that I was going to ask her to marry me. Tammy (her friend) told me that Christie was in shock.

Christie called 14 times that day and stopped by my apartment 3 times. My car was in the garage and she couldn't tell if I was home so I didn't answer the door. Her messages were her apologizing, crying as it were and wanting to know if we could do it all over again. Not on your life! I finally put a block on all her calls.

Over the next few weeks I successfully avoided her and after that, went to visit my folks where I grew up, using the two weeks of vacation I'd hope to spend with Christie. It's funny, a girl I grew up with across the street was back from college and we started talking, hit it off and I took her out on a few dates. It got serious pretty fast and I called and gave my two weeks notice to my job and found out they had an opening in a plant very near my home town! Julia (the neighbor girl) and I had never dated growing up but spent time together, but now, it was almost like love at first sight!

I stayed with my folks, not going back to my apartment and started my new job. When my lease was almost up, with 3 days to go, I borrowed my dads truck and Julia and I took it to retrieve everything from my apartment. It didn't take long and I was all moved home. To say Julia was fun and low maintenance would be an understatement! Over the next few months Julia and I became closer and she took a job with my own company. After 6 months together I got the shock of my life.

We went out to dinner and Julia was fixed up beautifully, with that little black dress that hugged her girlish curves very nicely. Our dinner was great and as usual, I had more fun with her than anyone else I'd ever dated. This was the girl and beside her, Christie was sadly lacking. But it was with no small surprise when Julia stood as if she wanted to dance and when I stood, she dropped to one knee, produced a ring and asked me to marry her! Holy crap!

Of course, I said yes, and the entire restaurant began clapping, I hadn't noticed anyone else was watching! The next day we went shopping for a ring for her and another 3 months, we were married. It went against all odds, we both went to our wedding night as virgins. 25 years later, we're still learning together, especially now that the kids are grown and gone!

You can't not know what happened with Christie. About six months after we were married, I received an announcement for Tammy's wedding, she was going to marry a fellow I worked with! He and I still corresponded but this was the first I learned they were to be wed. Julia was excited to go with me and we made the 6 hour drive to where I used to live when Christie and I dated. The wedding was fantastic and Christie was in it. Julia and I sat together and when the wedding procession went back outside to the reception area, the entire church full of folks followed.

Julia had excused herself to 'freshen up', (whatever it is that women do!) and I was mingling, talking with old friends. Talking with Tammy finally, she was happy to see I'd made it and admitted, it was a way to get me to talk with Christie, since I'd avoided her since that night. From Tammy I found Christie eventually broke it off with Tim and was ready to settle down with one person. About that time, guess who showed up? Yep, Christie. Sugar wouldn't have melted in her mouth and she was all over me, apologizing and going on and on.

It didn't take long for her to let me know she was available and how she wished I'd never left. I reminded her I was a one woman man and she made it clear she wanted more than one man. That made her tear up and she admitted to realizing what a mistake she made and hadn't dated anyone at all since breaking up with Tim. I asked her if her and Tim had had sex while they went out and she admitted, yes, they had sex and when pressed, admitted it was quite often because she live at his place part of the week. More news I hadn't known!

About that time I felt a set of arms come around me from the back and a familiar mouth give me a kiss on the cheek. Julia moved around me and then while holding me tight, she told me later she was staking out her territory, asked me to introduce everyone. I couldn't wait! I introduced her to Tammy and then her new husband. I saved Christie for last and introduced her as someone I used to know. When I introduced Julia to them, it was as my wife of 3 months! The only thing I regret is that no one took a picture at the exact moment Christie understood what it was I said.
