Story that litmus tests the reader
I was pretty flip commenting on this for first time , literally years ago. Now I admire how well written that last scene was. It seemed like the narrator might have mocked and derided her or just ignored her , perhaps feeling pity or even pleasure for her literal aesthetic ' crash and burn '. Loved the ending because it surprised me and yet was valid based on narrator's self disclosure.
Could so easily have tipped the other way. Only the best authors do this and make it look easy.
