Paid per bracket ?

Nothing spoils a story quicker than irritating construction. This story started by giving the reader the impression that the author was being paid royalties for the use of brackets. Once the tone is set, every other irritating trait of the writer jumps off the page at you and it becomes near impossible to enjoy the story.
