You summed up a beautifully ordinary life of two loving people in a manner that was powerful and touching - precisely because of how straightforward and ordinary the language used is. The twist of might have been...it doesn't feel as if he regrets so much as simply wonders. And it does make one wonder if it was kinder that he never knew Betty's true feelings.

I think everyone has a 'what if' or 'might have been' in their lives...this piece is almost an essay on how sometimes, we never even notice the turn on the road as we pass it by...until it's long gone. Gorgeously done, sir.
