This could be mistaken by some, on cursory read-through, as poetic prose - but it's not. The recurring sounds throughout this bind it in a subtle fashion; the line-breaks give us pause to consider the clear imagery and changes wrought by Time and events; there appear cleverly defined, economically worded, three quite separate stages of a relationship. The fact Age is introduced in the opening lines and juxtaposed with Youth makes for an even stronger contrast between the wisdom of experience and the naivety of inexperience, and it's not till the late 'middle-age' that an understanding of the saying is coldly unwrapped.
The Cat seems the perfect embodiment of this 'thing' that comes between.
A piece to create empathy within the minds of many readers. As usual, your musical voice combines with a restraint I often struggle with to create a deceptively simplistic piece on the surface. It leaves a lingering sadness in its wake.

way to put into words what seems to happen to so many of us. Life intervenes, time passes and then there you are with the "cat" between you.
