The Hero and his Knack

are the central objects of many Fantasy stories. This is well done...

amazing!

the way you told of Rowan's toils over the blade of the sword was simpley a masterpiece. your knowlage of the art of blacksmithing is something that all other authors who write about the era of swords and knights should read about and know!

I still love it, but you might have gotten a fact wrong...

I say 'might', because I'm not sure how hard his sword is supposed to be in comparison to our ancient swords, but, in general, whetstones were used to take the razor edge OFF of a blade, so that it would be less likely to chip or crack during battle. (That is not to say that you made the blade dull -- just slightly less than razor sharp.)

A good story but there are some fallacies here

You fold something with multiple metals more than about 20 times and you end up with something that acts as homogenized steel. The folded hundreds of times is mostly a myth for anything that is used rather than decorative. When people talk about folds they typically are looking at the layers With multiple metals you are talking something close to japanese sword smithing. The steel can be folded transversely, (from front to back), or longitudinally, (from side to side). Often both folding directions are used to produce the desired grain pattern. This process, called the shita-kitae, is repeated from 8 to as many as 16 times. After 20 foldings, (2 to the 20th power, or about a million individual layers), there is too much diffusion in the carbon content, the steel becomes almost homogenous in this respect, and the act of folding no longer gives any benefit to the steel.
