It smacks of fantasy without a ring of truth to it. He stayed with her all that time? His job was something other than what he claimed? His daughter knew and was able to keep her mouth shut? Sorry, but I think you can sail the titanic through this one.

accidental humour
I initially just skipped over the misspelling, then I realized it may be part of the big joke.
" A drunk Jake, and a very drunk Stephanie were in front of the Chapel of Love. An Elvis clone was in the process of marring them, with me waving to the camera. I chimed in after everyone had time to understand that Elvis was marring Stephanie to Jake."
True statement, the wedding was marred, and both Jake and Stephanie ended up marred as a result.

Life is stranger than fiction. I can easily see someone in this position taking the steps that the guy did to be able to take care of his daughter rather than leave her at the nonexistent mercy of such awful people. First rate story. I look forward to reading more of your work.

lmao... to have spent nearly twenty years thinking you were putting one over on someone only to find out that it was you who was being fooled has got to be so annoying I'm surprised that Jake and maybe Stephanie didn't blow gaskets.
I'm not sure why Stephanie felt the need to apologize to Mark there near the end. After all, even though she had been cuckolding the wrong man she presumably loved Jake and she DEFINITELY cheated on him wIth the other guy.
I'm not sure I understood all the money issues Mark described but I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt until I reread it.
Good story overall though...
Money Part Confusing
No one retiring from the military, after 20 years, of being single, is going to be broke. In a real situation, someone in Jake's position, would have at least a six figure savings account. In reality, most men, in the military marry early in their careers. At the 20 year point, as a general rule the only single hererosexual men, are single as a result of being divorced, and are most likely paying child support. They could possibly be broke.

I liked the twist
Not that the event I'm about to describe has any relevance to this story, but here is a similar twist:
Peyton Manning was leading the Colts down the field with less than two minutes left in the game versus the New York Jets (I think). Manning is a dirty trickster in his own right, frequently using all the time on The Clock so his opponent doesn't have an opportunity to respond. This time the Colts managed to fritter away all but one minute 15 seconds before they scored to go ahead touchdown. The suspense was palpable. Could the Colts defense hold the Jets for a minute 15? Did Manning run off enough clock to ensure his team a victory?
When Indy kicked off, the answer was immediate. The Jets ran the kick back for their own go-ahead touchdown.
Peyton, the dirty trickster, had now HIMSELF inherited the 1:15 on the clock, less the time the kickoff return had taken. So the question became, did he leave himself enough time to win the game? Or was he going to be victimized by his own dirty trick?
Silly question. The Colts took the lead again with about 10 seconds left and this time kicked off short. Game Over. Peyton and his Colts win.
Just a reflection on a real-life plot twist similar to OH's, which I liked. Oh, and there is really nothing dirty about burning clock in sports unless you are losing the game. Then it seems incredibly evil.

Ok in USA I maybe?
laws are different in NZ. Mark would be screwed in NZ, we have these property laws that relate to a couple living together as partners unmarried so that after two years their property is shared (Common Law Wife). Therefore Mark could claim half of her house as it was inherited after they where living together and she could claim half of his wealth and most likely alimony for a number of years to train and get a job. I think the false marriage doco would cause Mark a bit of a problem also as Stephanie would have used it to get a new drivers license under her false married name, fraud I think. Good writing. #5 TK

I think Tonykiwi is wrong.
Jake, her real husband, came home from the army once a year for four weeks. This maintained their marriage obligations. Mark was just a boarder who left the home once a year for four weeks. Just because Stephanie gave sex to Mark didn't make their relationship a common law marriage. Also in the last three years there were no sexual relations between Mark and Stephanie.
Pretty good read.
Only one question comes to mind, doesn't pertain to the story but to Harry in VA...Has harry been committed yet? Must have some pretty pee poor medicos in VA if Harry's still walking around in public.
