One thing I forgot to mention
... is that Spot is blind; eyeless, in fact, made without them. She "sees" in sound, with hearing impossibly, inhumanly acute. It's for that reason Anhelia undresses in the darkness for her lover, giving her a show that only she could possibly appreciate.

This scene shows characters with intelligence and humor -- I want to know more about them now, and when the novel comes out I'd be very interested in reading the whole thing. The combination of magic and steampunk also intrigues me -- reminds me of a 19th century Shadowrun.
