Goddess knows I am notoriously unsympathetic to those spineless males who are incompetent to man-up and take responsibility for their obligations......
BUT THAT AIN"T THIS STORY!!
As the author unfolds the storyline, he reveals that the character Joanie was running a modified version of the old badger con game. Where she has affairs with married men to entrap them with a claim they got her pregnant. Then shake them down for hush money, maybe to pay for a fake abortion, perhaps set up for them to pay her a remittance to go away.
Obviously, if two or more of the men are acquainted, close enough to know about sensitive gossip, Joanie was making the professional swindler's mistake of trying to draw too much water from the same well. She needs to be less greedy and more mobile, selecting her victims from distant communities.
The character Jeff was obviously smart enough to pay attention to forewarning and proactive to monitor and collect incriminating info on Joanie. And the author makes it clear that Jeff's wife is amused by his shenanigans with other women. There is NO other information about their relationship or the wife's activities besides that she is a good cook. Truly a pearl beyond price!

Was it the same guy narrating the entire story? If so, why is wife okay with hubby's behavior? If there were two narrators, the story made no sense at all.
