He is a very giving husband.

Different Set of Rules

What do we know about Monica?

We know she is promiscuous.

We know she lied to Audrey about telling Rob to “bug off” at the party.

We know she had no problem with getting Audrey to lie to Rob about the “family emergency”.

We know Rob ‘instantly’ disliked Monica from the start. Did Monica return those feelings?

We know she was cheating on her husband within 6-8 months being getting married.

We know she views sex and fidelity a lot differently than Rob. (Listen to Rob and Monica describe the same incident. Rob to Audrey: “You did everything but fuck him while I sat back in the corner and watched. He played with your ass and your tits and he had his tongue so far down your throat that it probably touched the backside of your belly button. You made absolutely no attempt to shut him down.”
Monica to Rob: "I know what went on. Nothing!”)

Audrey is another interesting character study. She repeatedly fails the boyfriend/husband test. It is like she is incapable of learning from her prior actions. She gets Rob to take her to a party and then abandons him. She breaks a date and lies to him to go out with someone else. The next time she doesn’t lie she just goes on a date over his objections and then engages in really inappropriate behavior for someone who is supposedly in a committed relationship. (See above)

Did she see anything wrong with what she did? Evidently not. Not then anyway. "I swear to you Rob that nothing was going to happen. Okay, maybe I did go a little overboard, but we were having a good time and I was just going with the flow. I told Kyle ahead of time that I had a steady boyfriend and not to expect anything."

She told him nothing was going to happen but a few drinks later he is playing with her tits and ass and she is “going with the flow.” A few more drinks and the flow might have wound up in his bed. And she had the nerve to get pissed when Rob interrupted her ‘fun.’

Six months into her marriage he takes her for an evening out, she sees Monica, Tom and two guys and she joins them at their table totally abandoning Rob. Can you say disrespect? Isn’t this still supposed to be the honeymoon period? I would have walked without giving her the $20. Wonder if she would have noticed? And how long would it have taken?

About that time Rob finds out that Monica is a serial cheater. Gee, just the kind of woman I want my wife to be best friends with.

But of course Audrey is incapable of learning. Monica’s back and Audrey is hanging with her and the single girls on Thursday night. News flash Audrey – They are single and you are not.

Again she fails the husband test. She let’s her partner de jour put his hands on her ass and goes out to neck with him in his car. Not once, repeatedly.

I love Audrey’s reasoning for what she was doing on Thursday nights. “I was being a bitch. Every one of those guys saw my wedding rings and knew I was married, but they came after me anyway. I got a kick out of letting them buy me drinks and then leading them on until they thought they were home free.”

See Rob what she did was okay because she was teaching them a lesson! She was making them suffer! Boy, did she show them. And Rob, she really, really hated it! It was terrible having them play with her tits and ass and making out. And it was with different guys each time which really makes all the difference.

And they shouldn’t have made a play for her because she was married! The fact she was with single women looking to hook up with someone was immaterial. The fact she didn’t shut them down didn’t matter. The fact she let them touch her in a manner inappropriate for a married woman, did not take offense, and led them on shouldn’t mean anything. She was actually doing a Public Service!

So at the end - when Monica, who is a promiscuous, cheating, liar who Rob actively dislikes and has a very casual view of sex - tells Rob that he should let Audrey continue to hang with the girls because he doesn’t “have to worry” about her he - goes along with it? Gosh Rob does she get to continue with the dirty dancing and necking in the car?

It's a JPB World

Although the newbies might not realize it, this is a mild story for you Bob. And yet the characters still act as most of the previous ones did in your universe. I agree that as mild as it is for you putting it in the Romance category might be a little much. The only difference between this and your usual Loving Wives story is she didn't get fucked or give a blowjob. Or at least we think she didn't. There is the same sense of total selfishness in the wife and the outraged husband who never seems to be outraged enough to get in touch with reality. The ending to your little scenario is what makes you beloved and hated at the same time. Rob actually listens to what Monica says even though she is a cheating slut who has treated him with disrespect and enabled Audrey to do the same for years. If there is any woman who he should hate and disregard it is Monica. But not our Rob. Even though he finally has them separated and he has the upper hand he gives in! Yeah in a JPB story the husband can't win even when he does.

I think, all of us - your readers, would agree that Audrey will let things get out of hand and/or get overwhelmed and laid.

I think she'll have some hurt and worry but her good friend Monica will coax her through it and eventually Rob will walk away again...maybe for good?

It's terrible when you love someone so much that you keep justifying indiscretions on their part.

No hope for the hubby in this story or any other of yours I've read. I now have a note reminding me not to drive down a road with your name on it again. They're all dead ends.

I enjoyed this story, that said, yeah. I don't really see this as necessarily a happy ending. We have no real reason to believe a thing that Monica says...

Keep in mind what Monica said, before. She */wants/* Rob, and despite her protestations she's never been all that good a friend. I could easily see her subtly encouraging the wifey to do something stupid so she can get a chance at someone she thinks might be able to keep up with her.

I mean, come on, Rob never ever really paid much attention to Monica previously in the stories. Now, at the end, he can't help but notice how freakin' hot she is? She's trying to get his attention.

Well written, but...

...I found the ending extremely disappointing. After ONE conversation with Monica, which lasts all of five minutes, and one night to think it over, the husband is suddenly cool with the idea that his wife is going to be out in some nightclub parking lot making out with some stranger every Thursday night before she come homes to fuck his brains out.

Sorry, don't buy it.

I won't say it might not happen in real life: people are pretty damned stupid when it gets right down to it. But this response is so foreign to Rob's character as developed in the story that it's just not convincing.

To be totally fair, I didn't get the impression of, "Go out and make out with guys in the back of cars." I got the impression of, you know, "will go hang out with her friends WITHOUT doing stupid shit."

I don't think that's how it'll end up, but give it what you will, the wifey is usually good about finding some new and exciting way to screw up rather than doing the exactly same thing over and over again.

Fregen hits the nail on the head

JPB ends the story with Monica coming in and acting very reasonable. But as fregen points out, we (and Rob!) KNOW she is not. Monica has her own moral code and it's NOT the same as Rob's.

Audrey's problem is that she is extremely immature and self centered. I like it that every time Rob slaps her down and doesn't back off until she apologizes, sometimes much later. To be honest I see Monica as only a small part of the problem. Monica is a free spirit slut. There's nothing the matter with that but most guys would be better off not getting serious with her. Listening to her whine that there are not a lot of good husbands out there is hilarious. Slut women don't get good husbands. However, Monica is only being Monica. Is Audrey a child that she can't recognize her own disrespectful behavior? Monica says a couple times that she is going to look out for Audrey. Is Audrey so immature that she can't look out for herself? She learns after a while but VERY slowly. Then we get to the final lesson. Audrey is the self appointed judge jury and executioner of guys who try to pick up married women. She doesn't care that she has to act like a slut to get to the guys. She doesn't consider the danger she places herself in. And she's not being honest with herself. She comes home HORNY. She is enjoying what she is doing. All her proclamations of doing it to nail the guys are crap.

Maybe Audrey really won't cheat. It's hard to tell if she will. Most of her actions are just touchy feely. Not right but not horrible. The lying, as usual, is the worst part. But Rob accepting that she is safe with Monica is brain dead. If the other girls are out to dance with guys is Audrey going to just sit there? What is she going to do if a guy gets pissed when she won't put out? This is NOT a safe environment. Her "friends" don't share her morals and the environment is a dating environment with all that entails. I am good with the story until Rob's brain failure right at the end. If Rob's that great a guy why not invite him along on Thursday? They all end up with guys anyway.

Once upon a time

I was married to a woman a lot like that. Fine at home, the minute she was out of sight she was doing something.

My answer was easy. I have not seen her for over 35 years.

I did get one email once, it seems she was between husbands and curious about me after nearly 30 years. Maybe a Summer rerun and all of that?

I must say, this author really knows how to create and then write a wonderful character. Loved Audrey...also Monica. Great characters always make a wonderful read. I really enjoyed this story.

So Monica says she would have stopped her before she crossed the line. Where wa she when Audrey was making out in the back of cars like a horny 16 year old? The fact that she was upset when she saw ROB do the same thing shows me she knew what she was doing was wrong. Not saying that she can't go out with her friends but when her common sense falls by the wayside it's just setting up for future problems.

Come on. How many readers are okay with necking in a car after "girls night out." Okay for those of you who like your wife/gf fooling around with your permission, how many are okay with it when the wife is hiding it. This wasn't a case of an agreed to open marriage. She was in a strange man's car making out without her husbands consent. I'm sorry, I really do have an open mind about things but to meet guys like that behind his back, she might as well have gone all the way because its the trust that is gone. I just don't find the characters to reacting in a real manner. This is similar (real similar) to another story you wrote before, perhaps that one ended differently which is why you chose to post under a different category. Writing was good, characterization and plot didn't work for me.

Somehow when I read one of JPB's stories I feel winded when I finish, like I have been running. I guess it is the pace of the narrative, or maybe I don't have to slow down to think about parts of the story. That said, this was pretty good, although why on earth a wife would go to a mans car and make out passionately only to shut him down is beyond me. Rob pointed out quite correctly that one them might not take no for an answer and rape is about the least that could happen.

In any case, a curious marriage, but OK if it works for them.

That last scene needed a rewrite

First off, the good. I actually like the male character. Like a lot of your characters, he isn't obnoxious or over the top. He seems to follow his principles though, like most men, he has a weakness for pussy and affection and mixes up that with love and devotion.

Second, I like the fact that the wife ISN'T fucking around (much). She is pushing an envelope with half assed rationalizations but humans are complicated things.

But to the last 'Monica scene'. It was all wrong!

Monica: That girl would no more cheat on you than I could stay celibate for a week. Besides, if I thought she was leaving the bar to do you dirt I would grab her arm, pull her back and slap some sense into her. Unlike the rest of the girls in the group she has it made. She has what the rest of us want and she knows it."

Rob leaned back. "Bullshit!" She started to get indignent but he cut her off. "The first time I was watching you and the others too, you were already driving away probably blowing the man of the moment in his car leaving Audery alone in the car with a stranger doing who knows what. By allowing that to happen, you really hurt our relationship and if you cared, you REALLY cared what happened to her, you'd understand that I'm part of what makes her happy."

"That's not fair Rob. Don't make this a pissing contest between the two of us."

"No, you already did that by pushing her and allowing this to come to a head. Now she's reassessing her relationships and you are scared to lose a friend. If she goes out on Thursdays and I get a hint of anything like that going on again, I'm calling a divorce lawyer. So, bitch, how much do you really care about her. of and the guy wins the lottery and hem and monica head off on a cruse never lookign back.

to me that the only real ending that fits.

It's a Cheating Wife Story

Wrong section and cheating is cheating. Love would have not had someone's hand on another person's spouse. Period. There's no leyway here. Disappointment because its label "romance" and there is nothing romantic about these characters and their behavior.

And he should have cut his losses in H.S. and keep walking. Real friends will not put you in that position or ask you to do anything like that.

The woman's mental; what Audrey was doing wiouldn't pass the husband test. A lot of guys would have divorced simply for making with another man .

'Thursdays out' are a bad idea.

I wouldn't trust Monica as far as I could throw her! The 'Thursday nights out' are to 'pick up' joints. If they were just to restaurants for talk, that would possibly be ok.
If husband were free to join the girls at the table on Thursdays that might work, if it didn't disrupt the other girls' activities, but that's unlikely! He should at least get a friend or a detective to accompany Audrey occasionally. An alternative is for hubby to have a regular joint activity with Audrey on Thursday nights. A movie, a bridge group, or a non-profit group such as reading club, etc.
