Otherwise, noun followed by "s" is plural--"her friends sent her a bottle of whiskey", or "her nephews drank it all".
It's a chaise longue, French for long chair. And she was lying, not laying, on it, unless she is a chicken, of course. Finally, though her closest neighbor may have been in the closet, that person was still the closest neighbor.
