Opening paragraph?

You do realize, I presume, that the opening paragraph has no apparent relationship to the ending of the chapter.

Clarification

It's just chapter 1. The opening paragraph is the ending and the rest of the story is a flashback narrative. How and why he came to be in that state you will find in the subsequent chapters.

Driving

How did he manage to drive his car after he has been slurring drunk? You won't sober up from that, not that soon anyway.
