And then spend some time actually developing the story. It could be a fantastic story -- the premise is hot -- but it falls so flat because it rushes into an unbelievable situation without context.

The story is about fantasy - a fantasy that is very unlikely to ever happen in the real world. I could spend time making the situation more 'believable' and adding context but that would ruin the point. If you can't accept the situation just for the purposes of the story then it simple isn't going to work for you. :-)
