Etaski, It's been nagging the back of my mind, that in the Subterranean darkness available modes of sight, without an available light, could not read two-dimensional characters.

All these clever people and no one has thought to develop writing systems based on intaglio such as engravings or embossed such as Braille? Either would be legible to any of the non-light vision methods you mentioned.
