more annoying than a spy, assassin or other supposed bad ass whining about how he "loved her" or "was just a job." Nobody's going to feel sorry for the moron because he's supposed to be smarter than that in the first place. Presumably, he's smart enough to know as well that she's a fellow spy and that he was running afoul of the agency that they work for.

It spoils a story that would probably be perfectly acceptable without it.
